What were some aspects that you put special efforts in for the opening of Grand Hyatt Jeju?

Recruiting: Mass recruitment to attract the local Jeju residents to join JDT. Training: Ensure new recruits are trained according to Hyatt's service standards (Rooms/F&B/Spa/Events) including the 9 Hyatt customer touchpoints: Pre-arrival, Arrival, Guest Room, Social Spaces, Activities/Services, Events, Dining, Departure, Post Departure

Hotel design and interiors: ensure all details to the finest details are perfect for the comfort and enjoyment of our guests. Integrated workplace structure: Departments like HR, S&M and Engineering are integrated to serve both Grand Hyatt Jeju and JDT to ensure synergy in workplace process - increased productivity and man power cost savings

 

What is the role and position of Grand Hyatt Jeju within Jeju Dream Tower Integrated Resort?

Grand Hyatt is the hotel management company engaged by JDT to manage 1,600 rooms, 14 F&B outlets, Events, Weddings and Spa. Grand Hyatt Jeju as part of Jeju Dream Tower is marketed as an integrated resort: JDT (HAN Collection, Entertainment) and Grand Hyatt Jeju (rooms, F&B, spa, events).

 

Jeju Dream Tower opening as the first urban Integrated Resort (IR) must have been the talk of the town, right?

Yes, Jeju Dream Tower is the first Integrated Resort in Jeju City with the biggest hotel rooms, the biggest collection of F&B restaurants (14 F&B) under one roof, Han collection fashion retail with more than 200 local Korean brands and the biggest outdoor pool deck in Jeju.

 

The hotel opened during the Covid19 pandemic, how you are dealing with the situation?

We have been receiving very positive response from the domestic market and local Jeju residents on how we have implemented strict Covid-19 checks, controls and preventive measures to ensure the safety of our guests - temperature checks when guests enter the hotel, cleanliness and safety measures in our rooms, facilities and restaurants (GBAC certification).
JDT has enriched the local hospitality and entertainment scene with the integrated resort concept.

 

In addition to the influence of the pandemic, how are you setting your target audience?

My assumption is that once you have foreign customers it will be normalized. Post covid, the customer mix will be 50% Korean and 50% international guests. Jeju is a very popular destination even for the Koreans. However we would like to introduce Jeju again to international market example i.e. China, South East Asia

 

What would you say the core competitiveness of Grand Hyatt Jeju is?

One of the best sales distribution networks - Hyatt.com, relationship with OTAs, MICE and corporate database etc. One of the strongest global hospitality brands with strong and established presence in Korea with the presence of Grand Hyatt Seoul in Korea for the last 43 years. Diverse workforce with strong skill sets and high service standards.

 

As Grand Hyatt Jeju is the largest Grand Hyatt in APAC, is the Hyatt group putting in a lot of effort into the hotel as well?

Yes, even at this time, Grand Hyatt Jeju is receiving international coverage, including local domestic awareness - high visibility on Hyatt.com, partnerships with global partners like Visa, domestic market campaigns (room promotions), etc.

We also have Hyatt Sales force in Korean/ SEA/ China introducing Grand Hyatt Jeju to their own markets in preparation for the opening of the borders.

 

What is something that you would emphasize on hotel operations?

Operation's precision on ensuring we deliver our service and products consistently with high service and product delivery standards. Emphasis on understanding our guests and personalized service.

   
 

Are you actively partnering up with local communities and external companies? I assume this is critical at a location such as Jeju.

JDT also support the local community by buying from them, supporting the local farmers, producers and vendors. JDT is positioned as a key contributor to the Jeju community - we engage with community work with schools and various charities.

We work with local Korean brands such credit card companies, car brands, to engage the domestic Korean market.

 

Compared to where you worked in Shanghai and Macau, how do you view the Jeju hotel & resort market and what future prospects do you have on the Jeju market?

Shanghai and Macau are mature and stable markets popular with both Korean domestic and international travelers.

Jeju is better known to local Korean domestic travelers than international travelers. With the borders opening and flight accessibility, we hope to push Jeju as Asia's top travel destination and position JDT as the regions newest and most exciting.
