The Travelers' Choice awards honor travelers' favorite destinations, properties, and activities worldwide based on the reviews and opinions collected in a single year from Tripadvisor travelers. We recognise top-rated properties with two distinctions: Travelers' Choice Best of the Best (formerly Travelers' Choice) is our highest honour. Based on service, quality and customer satisfaction, the award identifies and ranks the very best hotels, destinations, restaurants, experiences, etc., in specific categories and geographies. Travelers' Choice (formerly Certificate of Excellence) recognizes hospitality businesses that earn consistently great user reviews.

It is our way of acknowledging the hard work and time that many properties invest and a way to help them stand out from the competition.

Please explain the process of Travelers' Choice. (Including the duration of the process, methodology, etc.)

Travelers' Choice Best of the Best and Travelers' Choice winners are calculated based on the millions of reviews and opinions collected in 2019 from travelers around the world on Tripadvisor. The awards take into account the quality and quantity of traveler reviews, and ratings specific to each award category. The hallmark of winners is and will continue to be remarkable service and quality experiences for travelers.

"Quality" refers to the average review score and the average score of any relevant sub-questions of a property on Tripadvisor.

There is no application process for Travelers' Choice, you cannot pay for an award, and there is no panel of judges. The achievement is earned over time based on the quality and quantity of real traveler reviews on Tripadvisor.

There were some delays in the announcement of Traveler's choice this year. Could you explain how Covid-19 impacts the announcement of Traveler's Choice awards?

In previous years, Tripadvisor's Travelers' Choice awards categories have been announced individually, and spread out across the year. In February, Tripadvisor released the Travelers' Choice Awards for Destinations, including Popular, Trending, and Emerging Destinations, and Beaches. This was before the COVID-19 pandemic caused widespread stay at home orders. We decided to delay the announcement of the rest of our 2020 awards until winners are better able to share their news with a receptive and enthusiastic audience that's ready to respond and take action. While we could continue to hold and release awards throughout the year, we want to properly honor winners who consistently stood out to travelers for their outstanding service and quality. As travelers and diners begin to venture out again, award winners will be equipped with this accolade as a reflection of their great work. And travelers can get inspired for every aspect of their future trip, including where to eat, stay, and play.

What is new about this year's Traveler's Choice awards?

For many years, our Travelers' Choice and Certificate of Excellence programs have honored select destinations, airlines, accommodations, attractions, experiences and restaurants around the world. This year, we're making important updates to help these programs better meet the needs of both businesses and travelers.

All awards will now fall under the Travelers' Choice umbrella: Properties that would have been recognized with the Certificate of Excellence will now be celebrated as Travelers' Choice winners, while properties that would have been Travelers' Choice winners will be celebrated as Travelers' Choice Best of the Best. This change will help us to better recognize our best partners and their achievements in serving Tripadvisor travelers and diners - while also bringing greater clarity around these awards to consumers, making them even more helpful and valuable.

The Travelers' Choice Best of the Best (formerly Travelers' Choice) is our highest honor. The award identifies and ranks the very best hotels, destinations, attractions, restaurants, etc., in specific categories and geographic areas, as rated and reviewed by travelers. Travelers' Choice Best of the Best award winners are among the top 1% of listings on Tripadvisor.

Travelers' Choice (formerly Certificate of Excellence) recognizes businesses that earn consistently great user reviews. Travelers' Choice award-winners are among the top 10% of listings on Tripadvisor.

Are there any tips for hotels on how to improve their rankings on Tripadvisor?

Tripadvisor's popularity index, more commonly referred to as rankings, is entirely based on travellers' reviews. There are three main factors that are taken into consideration: the Quality, Quantity and Recency of reviews.

The quality of a review is measured with our Tripadvisor bubble ratings which indicate the experience that a guest had with a hotel. One of the best ways to improve bubble ratings is for a hotel to first fully understand its own strengths and areas of improvement. This comes from detailed and regular analysis of their reviews across all online platforms. By treating each review as a precious gem, hotels should digest feedback and work on improving the experience that future guests will have.

Quantity and Recency have a very close relation to each other. Hotels that are looking to improve their rankings should take a very pro-active approach to collecting new reviews. The most effective way to do this is to simply ask guests to leave their experiences on Tripadvisor through reviews. By achieving a constant inflow of new reviews, then Quantity naturally improves as well.

By coupling an inflow of new reviews that are also well rated, a hotel has much better chances of improving their overall rankings. Tripadvisor already provides several tools to help hotels solicit more reviews such as stickers, printable cards and our 'Review Express' platform. These are some of the most simple things hotels should use to encourage review collection.

Over the last 6 months, we supported thousands of hotels through consulting and optimization of their presence on Tripadvisor while also reducing many of their commercial obligations to us. Given the challenges that Covid-19 has placed on the travel industry, every single advertising dollar matters.

On 15th Sep, we proudly launched Tripadvisor Navigator. This is a proprietary first-party data platform that delivers audience targeting, insights and performance reporting. It enables advertisers to more efficiently realize a return on ad spend (ROAS) by delivering more relevant and personalized advertising experiences to high-intent consumers.

Amongst many other initiatives, we are also weighing in on how to help hotels understand traveller behaviour in today's "New Normal". This includes helping hotels better understand the competitive landscape, improve their REVPAR, a full picture of their online reputation and more effective ways to improve it.
